On January 28, Professor Christoph Sorge gave a presentation on "Technical aspects of data protection-compliant digital identities" as part of the 16th European Data Protection Day at the invitation of Monica Grethel, the Saarland Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. The event of the Conference of Independent Federal and State Data Protection Supervisors (DSK) was held under the heading "The digital wallet in the EU - data protection nightmare or milestone for shaping Europe's digital future?".

Since the pandemic online services of all types are have become more prevalant throughout society. Various services require secure and trustworthy identification of users or individual proof of other personal attributes, such as degree certificates. Therefor the European Commission is planning a legal framework that will provide citizens and companies with a digital wallet.

Professor Sorge was joined by Dr. Markus Richter (State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community), Ann Cathrin Riedel (Chairwoman of LOAD e.V.), Arno Fiedler (Vice Chairman of the Verband Sichere Digitale Identität e.V., VSDI) and Thomas Lohninger (Managing Director of the Austrian EDRi member epicenter.works) to discuss the benefits and disadvantages and options for its (privacy-friendly) implementation.
