How can data protection be organized in a company? Do employees need training on data privacy? On January 19, Dr. Claus-Dieter Ulmer, Group Data Privacy Officer at Deutsche Telekom Group, gave a compelling presentation, providing over 150 participants with an exciting virtual evening of highly interesting information and important tips relating to data protection in companies.

Whether it be large or small, the organization of data protection in a company needs a strategy. For Ulmer, a strategy tailored to the company is the be-all and end-all of data protection. Therefore, he recommends that every data protection officer or business owner first obtains a picture of the level of data protection in his or her company. Regular employee surveys, may be used to gather the information needed. It is crucial to understand in which areas and to what extent help and improvement, with regard to data protection, is needed.

The data protection expert talked about the structure and organization of data protection and provided insight into systems and tools used at Telekom. Especially in a company that collects vast amounts of sensitive data, questions as to the whereabouts of the data, data protection and data use arise. In 2018, for instance, around 4,300 inquiries were received on this topic.

In line with the title of the presentation, "Data protection in companies - in light of current court decisions and social developments", Ulmer also addressed areas of data protection law in which no uniform legal basis has been established to date, such as the access to european data by third-party countries or with regard to the regulation of cookie settings. He pointed out that in the event of violations or omissions, data regulators from all over Europe can impose fines on companies in the millions.
