The Institute of Legal Informatics presented itself with its own stand to the visitors of the Saarland University’s Open Day on 26th May 2018 under the heading of "Experiment: accidents involving robotic cars". The large number of interested visitors could participate actively in the experiment or could inform themselves about the Institute's extensive project work and study opportunities.
Road traffic situations can lead to ethical dilemmas in which it is unavoidable that the lives of one or more persons must be sacrificed, irrespective of how the vehicle behaves.
Based on a study by Jean-François Bonnefon, Azim Shariff und Iyad Rahwan, the results of which were summarised in an article published in the magazine "Science" (SCIENCE sciencemag.org 24 JUNE 2016 – VOL 352 ISSUE 6293 1573), members of the Institute of Legal Informatics' team developed a test to determine the behaviour of people in such circumstances. The visitors to the Open Day could take part in this test by being confronted with various dilemma situations on a computer screen and having to make decisions spontaneously and under time pressure. An evaluation of the tests, which the visitors to the Open Day were keen to participate in, will be available on the Institute’s website soon.
The Institute of Legal Informatics' stand exhibited numerous other projects. With "GesetzMobil", the visitors were offered the opportunity to "fill up" at a "Legal Petrol Station" where comprehensive collections of statutes could be downloaded onto mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or eReaders and then even be used offline. What makes the idea particularly practical: no annoying page turning – every legal provision can be accessed with 3 clicks!
From a technical perspective, the juris-Stiftungsprofessor of Legal Informatics Prof. Sorge and his team presented the theme "a spy in the children’s bedroom". At the start of 2017, a member of the Institute, Stefan Hessel, qualified the children's doll "My friend Cayla" as a prohibited transmitter pursuant to §90 TKG in an expert opinion which was published in the specialist journal JurPC (Link to that report). The doll interacts with the user by app via a smartphone connected by Bluetooth and requires an internet connection, particularly to have conversations. It can therefore be manipulated by external attackers. There are numerous other toys which work in this way and which therefore permit unfettered access to a children's bedroom. Stefan Hessel was interviewed on this subject by plusminus and this interview was presented at the Open Day in the form of a video.
The Certificate "IT-Law und Legal Informatikcs" and the job portal "IT-Recht.Karriere" were also presented to visitors.
Im Foyer des Gebäudes C3 1 reihte sich der Info-Stand des Instituts für Rechtsinformatik in die weiteren Stände der juristischen Fakultät ein. Interessierte Schüler und Abiturienten erhielten umfassend Auskunft über das Jura-Studium im Allgemeinen und die Möglichkeiten des vom Institut für Rechtsinformatik angebotenen im Besonderen.
In the foyer of building C 3.1, the Information Stand of the Institute of Legal Informatics was placed next to other stands from the University’s Law faculty. Interested school pupils and recent school leavers received comprehensive information about studying law generally and the opportunities offered of the elective subject area "IT-Law and Legal Informatics" offered by the Institute for Legal Informatics.
