On 19th July 2017, the Institute of Legal Informatics held a "Long evening of Data Protection"  as part of the public lecture series "Practical Application of Data Protection". The speakers were Markus Vehlow, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers GmbH and Dr. Claus-Dieter Ulmer, the company-wide data protection officer of the Deutsche Telekom.

The evening was very well received and was attended not only by the students of elective subjekt area 9 and those participating in the study programme "IT-Law and Legal Informatics".  The Saarland’s Secretary of State for Justice and Europe, Roland Theis as well as many practitioners also followed the lectures with great interest.

Firstly, Markus Vehlow gave an impressive talk on "Everyday examples relating to cyber security, cloud and data analytics" and,  amongst other things, highlighted the course of  projects and development in Cloud Computing. He contrasted the enormous economic potential which it has for companies with the challenges and risks which it poses.

Next, Dr. Claus-Dieter Ulmer spoke on the subject of "Data Protection in the digital world – the possibilities and challenges for companies". His lecture focussed particularly on the changes to business models brought about by digitisation. He dealt with the aims of the “Datenschutzgrundverordnung” such as the harmonisation of a high level of data protection and the establishment of legal certainty.

The evening was brought to a close with a small drinks reception which gave the attendees the opportunity to exchange ideas and ask any burning questions they may have had.
