On 5 July 2017, Dr. Fabian Nieman, who is a Partner at the international law firm Bird & Bird, gave a lecture as part of the Institute of Legal Informatics’ public lecture series "Practical applications of Data Protection Law" in which he explained the circumstances in which data breaches in companies must be reported.
Using illustrative example cases, he compared in detail the current (BDSG) legal position with the future one (DSGVO) and critically examined the new legislation. He spoke about the effect which the EuGH’s Safe Harbour decision has had on international data transfers. Finally, he gave the audience useful advice on how to deal with data breaches from a practical perspective.
